The encampment at Webster along Mosswood was recently cleared but the junk and debris has come roaring back. There seems to be no action on the part of the City regarding this chronic issue. We have to step around the needles, debris, feces, remnants of the explosion and fire (from the propane tank a resident reportedly threw into a fire). The notorious vehicles are lining up again, only briefly moving the Manila before boldly coming back, squeezing the lanes that motorists already fly down. This is dangerous. We cannot use the sidewalk. This is ridiculous. The picture I am posting is representative of only some of the entire two blocks covered in junk from the encampments. Please help us better work with our unhoused neighbors to make this a clean and safe neighborhood.

In a lawsuit filed two weeks ago, grassroots group Neighbors Together Oakland is demanding that the city enforce the encampment management policy the City Council passed last October. By failing to enforce the policy and find shelter for people sleeping outside, city staff have put Oakland’s housed residents and unhoused residents of the camps in danger, according to the lawsuit. Between November 2020 and June 2021 there were about 510 encampment fires in the city, according to the suit. And thanks to failed city policies, housed and unhoused Oakland residents are subject to “the constant threat of disease, build up of abandoned cars and wrecked vehicles, vermin, fires, and human waste,” the lawyers wrote.
